We all know how aggravating it is to have an itch you can't scratch.
It's OK at first, but as the seconds pass, your desire to scratch it reaches epic proportions. You try to reach but you can't, suddenly you are desperate! You reach for ANYTHING to try to help, rolled up newspaper, a coat hanger, even the door frame to help scratch...that...itch.
Chances are, you have seen your dog do the same.
An itchy coat is a common problem in dogs. It's even been linked to depression and accounts for up to 40% of all skin related vet visits!
Now, the majority of dog shampoo's on the market are not designed to treat itchy skin.
They contain synthetic chemicals, perfumes, colourants and a myriad of other ingredients which can seriously aggravate the condition.
But, that's enough about what doesn't work. I want to tell you about what really works to solve your dogs skin complaint.
What Are The Components Of A Good Anti Itch Shampoo
There are a few ingredient superheroes when it comes to combating itchy skin.
They have been around for decades, but they are incredibly expensive to produce, which is why many manufacturers avoid using them, despite their amazing properties.
So, without further ado, here are the key components of an effective dog shampoo for itchy skin.
Wait, what? Oatmeal...as in, breakfast oats? Yep, you've got it!
But, before you go slathering your dog in Readybrek, you should understand that Colloidal Oatmeal has gone through a special manufacturing process which makes it far more suitable for helping your dog.
Colloidal oatmeal is finely milled and then suspended in a liquid solution, which allow the oats to be absorbed easily, providing a protective layer, effectively trapping in your dogs natural moisture, providing many benefits for sensitive, irritated skin.
Aloe vera is another skin soothing agent. It's so good, it's use can be dated back to the Ancient Egyptians. Aloe contains over 75 nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids which all contribute to its soothing effect.
There are plenty of other vitamins which go into a good anti itch dog shampoo. Pro Vitamin B5 deserves an honourable mention as it not only hydrates but heals and protects.
A good shampoo will not only cure the itching but repair the hair follicles which have been damaged.
There is one ingredient which is responsible for this repair. Its another regular on your dinner plate but, like our friend, the Colloidal Oat, the Wheat Protein has to go though a manufacturing process before it serves its purpose.
Here comes the science bit.
Hydrolyzed wheat protein is an amber colored liquid derived from wheat germ. The hydrolysis of wheat involves an acidic, alkaline, or enzymatic process to extract the wheat nutrients which include proteins (amino acids) and peptides.
Due to its low mollecular weight, the protein is easily absorbed into the hair follicle to help repair and nourish damaged hairs.
So, there you have it. Combine those ingredients and you have a shampoo which will be sure to help your dog, if they suffer with itchy skin.
And here's one we made earlier..
Pro Pooch, have made (in our humble opinion), possibly the greatest anti itch shampoo available in the UK today.
Not only have we included all of those totally awesome ingredients, we made a shampoo which is free from Soap, Alcohol, Parabens, Silicones, SLES, SLS, DEA and Enzymes.
There is nothing in this formulation that will risk upsetting your dogs delicate PH balance.
We are proud to say that our lovely customers have fallen head over heals in love with this product, for one reason (apart from the cute bowtie) and that is because it really, really works.
